Microsoft has made a huge splash with their Surface products. It’s making all the headlines. But apparently, not all for the right reasons. One complain about the line is that, it doesn’t feature a USB-C port.
Though in an interview with The Verge, Surface head honcho Panos Panay clarified the reason behind this and also gave us a bit of hope for future.
According to them, Microsoft is planning to release a dongle that will attach to the power port on the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop. It will allow users to both charge and transfer data. So, you can charge your PC and phone with the same cable if it’s powerful enough. Many users complained it took them 10 to 12 hours to fill up their battery of Surface 3 which had a Micro USB port for power just because they didn’t use the right charger. So, it’s essential to know what kind of cable to use.
The idea of the USB cable was to create one universal port. With this omission that problem still remains. And to be honest many people still doesn’t know about USB-C and how it’s different from other USBs that came before. It’s a 24 pin USB connector with much greater speed and efficiency. It was developed around the same time as USB 3.1 but it still needs improvement. Maybe that’s why Microsoft decided to leave it out, for now.
Panay even joked: “If you love Type-C, it means you love dongles. We’re giving a dongle to people who love dongles.”
